They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them that you would leave them alone. So leave them alone; indeed they are evil; and their refuge is Hell as recompense for what they had been earning.

Surah At-Tawbah: 95

{ لتعرضوا عنهم } So that you may turn away from them; do not rebuke them and do not reproach them.

{ فأعرضوا عنهم } So turn away from them; grant them their request.

{ إنهم رجس } This is the justification for abandoning their reproach. It means that reproach is of no benefit to them and will not reform them. Reproach is only effective for the refined person of good character. The believer is rebuked for a slip that occurs from him so that the rebuke may purify him by compelling him toward repentance and seeking forgiveness. As for these people, they are filth (rijs), and there is no way to purify them.

{ ومأواهم جهنم } Meaning: The Fire is sufficient for them as a reproach and a rebuke, so do not trouble yourselves with reproaching them.

Surah At-Tawbah: 96

{ يحلفون لكم لترضوا عنهم فإن ترضوا عنهم فإن الله لا يرضى عن القوم الفاسقين }
