Tafsir
Verse range: 9:96
{لترضوا عنهم} Their purpose in swearing by Allah is to seek your pleasure, so that it may benefit them in their worldly life.
{فإن ترضوا عنهم} For your pleasure alone will not benefit them if Allah is displeased with them, and they are exposed to His punishment, both immediate and deferred.
It is said: This was stated so that no one might mistakenly assume that the pleasure of the believers necessitates the pleasure of Allah with them.
It is said: They were Jadd ibn Qays, Mu‘attib ibn Qushayr, and their companions—eighty hypocritical men. When the Prophet (ﷺ) arrived in Medina, he said: "Do not sit with them and do not speak to them."
It is said: ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy came, swearing that he would never stay behind [from a campaign] again.
