(7) So when you have finished, then labor.

If you ask: How does the statement "So when you have finished, then labor" connect to what precedes it?

I say: When He enumerated His past blessings upon him and promised him future ones, He urged him to show gratitude and exert effort in worship, to labor in it, to connect one act of worship to another, to follow them up, and to be diligent in not leaving any of his time empty of them. Thus, when he finishes one act of worship, he should follow it with another.

  • Ibn Abbas said: When you finish your prayer, exert yourself in supplication.
  • Al-Hasan said: When you finish your military campaign, exert yourself in worship.
  • Mujahid said: When you finish your worldly affairs, exert yourself in your prayer.
  • Al-Sha'bi saw a man lifting a stone and said: "This is not what the one who is finished was commanded to do."

A man sitting idle without work, or occupying himself with what does not concern him in his religion or his worldly life, is a sign of poor judgment, foolishness of mind, and the dominance of heedlessness. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I hate to see one of you idle, doing nothing—neither for the work of this world nor for the work of the Hereafter."

  • Abu al-Summal read faraghta with a kasra on the ra’, but it is not eloquent (fasiha).
  • Among the innovations: It is narrated that some of the Rafida read fansib with a kasra on the sad, meaning: "Appoint Ali for the Imamate." If this were valid for the Rafidi, it would be valid for the Nasibi to read it this way and make it a command for nasb (hostility), which is hatred and enmity toward Ali.

"And to your Lord, direct your longing." Make your longing directed specifically toward Him, and do not ask for anything but His bounty, relying upon Him. It has also been read as farrigh (make others long), meaning: make people long to seek what is with Him.

From the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Whoever recites Alam Nashrah (Surah Ash-Sharh), it is as if he came to me while I was distressed, and he relieved me."
