Primary text
The term for establishing an endowment is 'Waqafa' (وقفت وقفا). It is not correct to use the form 'Awqafta' (أوقفت) except in rare linguistic instances. The words 'Habasa' (حبست) and 'Ahbasta' (أحبست) are also used interchangeably with 'Waqafa'. The supporting evidence is the Hadith stating, 'If you wish, you may retain its origin and give away its usufruct.' The meaning of Waqf is the permanent retention of the principal asset while dedicating its yield (fruit) for charitable purposes.
