Primary text

It is prohibited to say merely, 'Ramadan has come,' because Ramadan is one of the names of Allah Almighty. Therefore, this statement must be qualified with something indicating the intent of the month to avoid contradicting sound prophetic traditions. It is recommended to say, 'The month of Ramadan,' in accordance with the verse, 'The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed' (Quran 2:185).

Some hold that the prohibition applies only when the statement is unqualified, allowing its use when specified as the month.
