The entirety of knowledge is threefold: a precise verse, an established Sunnah, and an equitable decree. Anything beyond these three categories is considered supererogatory (fadl). This is derived from the statement of the Prophet, peace be upon him, reported by Abu Dawud through Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As.
