What is the legal status of learning the laws of inheritance (Fara'id)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Inheritance Shares (Farā'id)
Primary text
Learning the laws of inheritance and teaching them is an obligation because they constitute half of all knowledge. This knowledge is prone to being forgotten, and it will be the first religious knowledge to be removed from the Ummah. This necessitates learning them diligently, as stated by the Prophet, peace be upon him, as reported by Ibn Majah, and affirmed by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, who advised that whoever learns the Quran should also learn the Fara'id.
Supporting text
Umar ibn al-Khattab, peace be upon him, declared that learning the Fara'id is part of one's religion, and that one should learn them just as one learns the Quran, grammar (Lahn), and the Sunnah.
