Primary text

In the Arabic language, Salat linguistically means supplication (Du'a). This is evidenced by the statement of Allah the Almighty: "And pray for them, indeed your prayer (salatuka) is a tranquility for them," where it means supplicate for them (Quran 9:103). Furthermore, the Prophet, peace be upon him, stated, "When one of you is invited, he should accept. If he is breaking his fast, he should feed him, and if he is fasting, he should pray (yusalli)".

Poetry also illustrates this linguistic meaning, as cited in the text where a daughter addresses her departing father, wishing him well with supplications.
