Musnad Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili 236:3

Al-Dawraqi Abu Abdullah Ahmad ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, Mubashir narrated to us, from al-Awza’i, from al-Zuhri—I think he said: Ali ibn al-Husayn informed me—that Ibn Abbas said: A man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) from the Ansar informed me that while they were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), a star was shot [across the sky], and it illuminated. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to them, "What did you used to say in the Jahiliyyah when something like this was shot?" They said, "Allah and His Messenger know best. We used to say: A great man was born tonight, and a great man died tonight." The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, "It is not shot for the death of anyone nor for his life. Rather, when our Lord, Mighty and Majestic is He, decrees a matter, the bearers of the Throne glorify Him, then the inhabitants of the heaven who are next to them glorify Him, until the glorification reaches the inhabitants of the heaven who are next to the bearers of the Throne. Then they say to those who are next to them, 'What did your Lord say?' So they inform them. The inhabitants of the heavens inquire of one another until the news reaches the inhabitants of the lowest heaven. Then the jinn snatch the hearing and cast it to their allies, and they are pelted. So whatever they bring as it is, it is true, but they mix it with lies or add to it."
