Hadith of Ashajj ‘Abd al-Qays
Hadith 184:2
Muhammad ibn Marzuq narrated to us, Rawh ibn Ubadah narrated to us, al-Hajjaj ibn Hassan al-Taymi narrated to us, he said: al-Muthanna al-Abdi, Abu Manazil, one of the Banu Ghanam, narrated to us, from al-Ashajj al-Asri, that he came to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) in a company from Abd al-Qays to visit him. They arrived, and when they reached him, the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stood up for them. They made their mounts kneel, and the people rushed toward him, and they did not change out of their travel clothes. But al-Asri stayed behind to tie the mounts of his companions and his own camel. Then he took out his clothes from his bag, and that was in the sight of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Then he approached the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and greeted him. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Indeed, there are two qualities in you that Allah and His Messenger love." He said: "What are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Deliberation and forbearance." He said: "Is it something I was created with, or something I have cultivated?" He said: "No, rather you were created with them." He said: "Praise be to Allah." He said: "O company of Abd al-Qays, why do I see that your faces have changed?" They said: "O Prophet of Allah, we are in a land with a harsh climate, and we used to make these fermented drinks to break down the meat in our stomachs. When we were forbidden from the vessels, that is what you see in our faces." The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "The vessels do not make anything lawful or unlawful, but every intoxicant is unlawful. And it is not for you to sit and drink until, when the veins become intoxicated, you boast to one another, and a man leaps upon his cousin and strikes him with a sword, leaving him lame." He said: "And he was among the people that day, the lame man who had been afflicted by that."
