Hadith 699:1
Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us—'Abdullah ibn Ahmad said: And Qutaybah wrote it to me—Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn al-Harith, from Yahya ibn Maymun al-Hadrami, that Abu Musa al-Ghafiqi heard 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir al-Juhani narrating hadiths on the pulpit from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Abu Musa said: "This companion of yours is either a memorizer or he is ruined. The last thing the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, entrusted to us was that he said: 'You must adhere to the Book of Allah. You will return to a people who love to narrate about me; so whoever says about me what I did not say, let him take his seat in the Fire. And whoever has memorized something from me, let him narrate it.'"
حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد، قال عبد الله بن أحمد: وكتب به إلي قتيبة، حدثنا ليث بن سعد، عن عمرو بن الحارث، عن يحيى بن ميمون الحضرمي، أن أبا موسى الغافقي سمع عقبة بن عامر الجهني يحدث على المنبر، عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أحاديث، فقال أبو موسى: إن صاحبكم هذا لحافظ أو هالك، إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان آخر ما عهد إلينا أن قال: " عليكم بكتاب الله، وسترجعون إلى قوم يحبون الحديث عني، فمن قال علي ما لم أقل، فليتبوأ مقعده من النار، ومن حفظ عني شيئا فليحدثه "
