Hadith of the Delegation of Abdul Qays
حديث وفد عبد القيس
Hadith 552:0
Narrated to us by Muhammad ibn Ja’far, who said: Narrated to us by Shu’bah, from Abu Ishaq, who said: I heard al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib narrating from the Prophet (ﷺ) regarding the delegation of ‘Abd al-Qays. He said: They came to the Prophet (ﷺ), and he said: "Who are the people?" or "Who is the delegation?" They said: "Rabi’ah." He said: "Welcome to the people—or the delegation—who are neither disgraced nor regretful." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we cannot come to you except during the sacred months, for there is a tribe of disbelievers from Mudar between us and you. So, command us with a decisive matter that we may inform those behind us, and by which we may enter Paradise." He commanded them with four and forbade them from four. He commanded them to believe in Allah alone. He said: "Do you know what belief in Allah alone is?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, paying zakat, and fasting Ramadan, and that you give a fifth of the spoils of war." And he forbade them from four: from *al-hantam*, *ad-dabba*, *an-naqir*, and *al-muzaffat*. He said: "Memorize them and inform those behind you of them."
