Hadith 413:1
Abdullah ibn Ahmad said: Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to me, he said: Ma’di ibn Sulayman narrated to us, he said: Shu’ayth ibn Mutayr narrated to us, from his father Mutayr—and Mutayr was present, confirming his statement—he said: "How did I inform you?" He said: "O my father, you informed me that Dhu al-Yadayn met you at Dhu Khashab, and he informed you that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) prayed with them one of the two evening prayers—which is the Asr—and he prayed two rak'ahs. The hasty people left, saying: 'Has the prayer been shortened? Has the prayer been shortened?' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stood up, and Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) followed him, and they were hesitant. Dhu al-Yadayn caught up with him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened, or have you forgotten?' He said: 'The prayer has not been shortened, nor have I forgotten.' Then he turned to Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: 'What is Dhu al-Yadayn saying?' They said: 'He has spoken the truth, O Messenger of Allah.' So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) returned, and the people gathered, and he prayed two rak'ahs, then he performed the taslim, then he performed the two prostrations of forgetfulness." Abu Sulayman said: "I have been narrating this for six or seven years: 'Then he performed the taslim,' and I am doubtful about it, and it is the most I have memorized."
قال عبد الله بن أحمد: حدثني محمد بن المثنى، قال: حدثنا معدي بن سليمان، قال: حدثنا شعيث بن مطير، عن أبيه مطير - ومطير حاضر يصدقه مقالته -، قال: كيف كنت أخبرتك؟ قال: يا أبتاه أخبرتني أنك لقيك ذو اليدين، بذي خشب، فأخبرك أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم صلى بهم إحدى صلاتي العشي - وهي العصر - فصلى ركعتين، وخرج سرعان الناس وهم يقولون: أقصرت الصلاة أقصرت الصلاة؟ فقام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم واتبعه أبو بكر وعمر رضي الله عنهما وهما مبتديه، فلحقه ذو اليدين، فقال: يا رسول الله أقصرت الصلاة أقصرت الصلاة أم نسيت؟ فقال: " ما قصرت الصلاة ، ولا نسيت " ثم أقبل على أبي بكر وعمر رضي الله عنهما فقال: " ما يقول ذو اليدين؟ " فقالا: صدق يا رسول الله، فرجع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وثاب الناس، فصلى ركعتين، ثم سلم، ثم سجد سجدتي السهو قال أبو سليمان: " حدثت ست سنين أو سبع سنين: ثم سلم، وشككت فيه، وهو أكثر حفظي "
