Hadith 1255:0
From the hadith of Fatimah bint Qays, the sister of ad-Dahhak ibn Qays: She said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ascended the minbar and laughed, then he said: "Let every person remain in the place where they are sitting." Then he said: "Do you know why I gathered you?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "By Allah, I did not gather you for an exhortation or a warning, but I gathered you because Tamim ad-Dari was a Christian man, so he came and pledged allegiance and accepted Islam. He narrated to me a narration that agrees with what I was telling you about the False Messiah (al-Masih ad-Dajjal). He narrated to me that he sailed in a ship with thirty men from Lakhm and Judham. The waves played with them for a month at sea, then they were driven to an island in the sea at the time of sunset. They sat in the small boats of the ship and entered the island. A beast with thick hair met them; they could not tell its front from its back due to the thickness of its hair. They said: 'Woe to you! What are you?' It said: 'I am the Jassasah (the Spy).' They said: 'What is the Jassasah?' It said: 'O people, go to this man in the monastery, for he is eager to hear news of you.' He (Tamim) said: When it named a man for us, we were afraid that it might be a devil. We hurried until we entered the monastery. There, we found the largest human being we had ever seen in creation, and the most tightly bound in shackles. His hands were gathered to his neck, and between his knees and his ankles were iron shackles. We said: 'Woe to you! What are you?' He said: 'You have been able to get news of me, so tell me who you are.' They said: 'We are people from the Arabs. We boarded a ship, and the sea became turbulent for a month, so we were driven to your island. We sat in the small boats and entered the island. A beast with thick hair met us, and we could not tell its front from its back due to the thickness of its hair. We said: "Woe to you! What are you?" It said: "I am the Jassasah." We said: "What is the Jassasah?" It said: "Go to this man in the monastery, for he is eager to hear news of you." So we came to you in haste, fearing that it might be a devil.' He said: 'Tell me about the date palm trees of Baysan.' We said: 'What do you want to know about them?' He said: 'I am asking you about its palm trees: do they bear fruit?' We said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Soon they will not bear fruit. Tell me about the Lake of Tiberias.' We said: 'What do you want to know about it?' He said: 'Is there water in it?' We said: 'It is full of water.' He said: 'Its water will soon disappear. Tell me about the spring of Zughar.' We said: 'What do you want to know about it?' He said: 'Is there water in the spring, and do its people irrigate with the water of the spring?' We said: 'Yes, it is full of water, and its people irrigate with its water.' He said: 'Tell me about the unlettered Prophet, what has he done?' We said: 'He has come out from Makkah and settled in Yathrib.' He said: 'Have the Arabs fought him?' We said: 'Yes.' He said: 'What did he do with them?' We informed him that he had prevailed over those of the Arabs who were near him, and they had obeyed him. He said to them: 'Has it happened?' We said: 'Yes.' He said: 'It is better for them to obey him. And I will tell you about myself: I am the Messiah, and I am about to be permitted to emerge. So I will emerge and travel through the earth. I will not leave any town without entering it within forty nights, except Makkah and Tayyibah (Madinah), for they are forbidden to me. Every time I try to enter one of them, an angel with a sword in his hand will meet me and turn me away from it. And upon every path leading to them, there will be angels guarding them.'" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) struck the minbar with his staff and said: "This is Tayyibah, this is Tayyibah, this is Tayyibah—meaning Madinah. Did I not tell you this before?" The people said: "Yes." He said: "I liked the narration of Tamim because it agrees with what I used to tell you about him and about Madinah and Makkah. Indeed, he is in the Syrian Sea or the Yemeni Sea. No, rather he is in the direction of the east, he is in the direction of the east, he is in the direction of the east," and he pointed with his hand toward the east. She said: I memorized this from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).
