Hadith of Hamnah bint Jahsh (RA)

حديث حمنة بنت جحش

Hadith 1298:0

Narrated to us by Muhammad ibn Ja’far, who said: Narrated to us Shu’bah, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abdur-Rahman, who said: I heard Muhammad ibn ‘Abdur-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Hisham narrating from ‘Amrah bint ‘Abdur-Rahman, from Hamnah bint Jahsh, that she said: I was experiencing intense and prolonged menstruation. I went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to ask him about it. I found him in the house of my sister, Zaynab bint Jahsh. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am experiencing intense and prolonged menstruation, so what do you command me to do regarding it? It has prevented me from praying and fasting." He said: "I suggest to you the use of *kursuf* (cotton), for it absorbs the blood." She said: "It is more than that." He said: "Then use a cloth." She said: "It is more than that; it is gushing forth." He said: "I will command you to do two things; whichever of the two you do, it will suffice you, though you know best which of the two you are stronger in. I command you to menstruate for six or seven days in the knowledge of Allah, then perform *ghusl*. When you see that you have become pure and are certain of it, then pray for twenty-four or twenty-three days, and fast, for that will suffice you. And do likewise every month, just as women menstruate and are purified for their menstruation and their period of purity." "And if you are able to delay the *Dhuhr* prayer and hasten the *‘Asr* prayer, then perform *ghusl* and combine the two prayers. And if you are able to delay the *Maghrib* prayer and hasten the *‘Isha* prayer, then perform *ghusl* and combine the two prayers, then do so. And perform *ghusl* for the dawn prayer and pray. This is how you should do it if you are able to do so." He said: "And I prefer the latter for you."
