Hadith 705:1
Abdullah ibn Muhammad narrated to us, and Abdullah ibn Ahmad said: I heard it from Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Shaybah, Marwan ibn Mu’awiyah al-Fazari narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Ta’ifi, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalid al-Adwani, from his father, that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the east of Thaqif, while he was standing upon a bow or a staff when he came to them seeking support from them. He said: "I heard him reciting: 'By the sky and the night comer (al-Tariq),' until he finished it." He said: "I memorized it during the Jahiliyyah while I was a polytheist, then I recited it in Islam." He said: "Thaqif summoned me and said: 'What did you hear from this man?' So I recited it to them. Those who were with them from Quraysh said: 'We know our companion better; if we knew what he says to be the truth, we would have followed him.'"
حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد، قال عبد الله بن أحمد: وسمعته أنا من عبد الله بن محمد بن أبي شيبة، حدثنا مروان بن معاوية الفزاري، عن عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن الطائفي، عن عبد الرحمن بن خالد العدواني، عن أبيه، أنه أبصر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في مشرق ثقيف، وهو قائم على قوس، أو عصا حين أتاهم يبتغي عندهم النصر، قال: " فسمعته يقرأ: والسماء والطارق حتى ختمها "، قال: فوعيتها في الجاهلية وأنا مشرك، ثم قرأتها في الإسلام، قال: فدعتني ثقيف فقالوا: ماذا سمعت من هذا الرجل؟ فقرأتها عليهم، فقال من معهم من قريش: نحن أعلم بصاحبنا، لو كنا نعلم ما يقول حقا لاتبعناه
