Hadith of Khawlah bint Tha’labah (RA)
حديث خولة بنت ثعلبة
Hadith 1254:0
Narrated Khawlah bint Tha'labah: My husband, Aws ibn al-Samit, performed *zihar* upon me (likened me to his mother's back). I went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to complain to him about my husband. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) began to argue with me regarding him, saying, "Fear Allah, O Khawlah, for he is your cousin." I continued to speak until the verses of the Quran were revealed concerning me. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was overcome by the state that usually overtook him when revelation came to him. When it cleared from him, he said, "O Khawlah, Allah has revealed concerning you and your husband." Then he recited to me: "Allah has indeed heard the statement of the woman who pleads with you concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah..." until he reached the verse regarding the expiation. He said, "Command him to free a slave." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, he does not have one." He said, "Then let him fast for two consecutive months." I said, "By Allah, he is an old man; he cannot fast." He said, "Then let him feed sixty poor people." I said, "He does not have anything to give in charity." He said, "We will assist him with a *faraq* (a measure) of dates." I said, "And I will assist him with another *faraq*, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "You have done well and acted righteously. Go and give it on his behalf, then treat your cousin kindly."
