Hadith of Khawlah bint Tha’labah (RA)
Hadith 1254:1
Sa'd ibn Ibrahim and Ya'qub narrated to us, they said: My father narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, he said: Mu'ammar ibn 'Abdullah ibn Hanzalah narrated to me, from Yusuf ibn 'Abdullah ibn Salam, from Khawlah bint Tha'labah, who said: By Allah, it is concerning me and concerning Aws ibn Samit that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed the beginning of Surah al-Mujadilah. She said: I was with him, and he was a very old man whose character had become poor and who had become irritable. She said: He entered upon me one day, and I spoke back to him about something, so he became angry and said: "You are to me like the back of my mother." She said: Then he went out and sat in the gathering place of his people for a while, then he entered upon me, and he wanted me for myself. She said: I said: "No, by the One in Whose hand is the soul of Khawlah, you shall not reach me, having said what you said, until Allah and His Messenger judge between us with His judgment." She said: He tried to force me, but I resisted him, and I overcame him as a woman overcomes a weak old man, and I cast him off from me. She said: Then I went out to some of my neighbors and borrowed her clothes, then I went out until I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and sat before him. I mentioned to him what I had encountered from him, and I began to complain to him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about what I was suffering from his poor character. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began to say: "O Khawlah, your cousin is an old man, so fear Allah regarding him." She said: By Allah, I did not depart until the Quran was revealed concerning it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was overcome by what used to overcome him, then it was relieved from him, and he said to me: "O Khawlah, Allah has revealed concerning you and your companion." Then he recited to me: {Allah has heard the speech of the one who argues with you concerning her husband and complains to Allah; and Allah hears your dialogue. Indeed, Allah is Hearing, Seeing} [Al-Mujadilah: 1] up to His saying: {And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment} [Al-Mujadilah: 4]. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "Command him to free a slave." She said: I said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he does not have anything to free." He said: "Then let him fast two consecutive months." She said: I said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he is a very old man; he has no strength for fasting." He said: "Then let him feed sixty poor people, a wasq of dates." She said: I said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he does not have that." She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "We will assist him with a basket of dates." She said: I said: "And I, O Messenger of Allah, will assist him with another basket." He said: "You have done right and done well. Go and give it in charity on his behalf, then treat your cousin well." She said: So I did. 'Abdullah said: My father said: Sa'd said: The 'araq (basket) is the container.
