Musnad Ahmad 194:2

Yahya ibn Hammad narrated to us, he said: Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from 'Asim ibn Kulayb, he said: Suhayl ibn Dhira' narrated to me, that he heard Ma'n ibn Yazid, or Abu Ma'n, say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Gather in your mosques, and when a group gathers, let them inform me." He said: So we gathered as the first of the people and came to him, and he came walking with us until he sat with us. Then a speaker among us spoke and said: "Praise be to Allah, for whom there is no limit to praise, and beyond whom there is no exit," and words similar to that. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) became angry and stood up. We blamed one another, and some of us blamed others, and we said: "Allah favored us by him coming to us as the first of the people, and he did such and such." He said: So we came to him and found him in the mosque of the tribe of so-and-so. We spoke to him, and he came walking with us until he sat in the place where he had been—or near it—then he said: "Verily, praise be to Allah; whatever Allah wills, He places before Him, and whatever He wills, He places behind Him. And indeed, some eloquence is magic." Then he turned to us, commanded us, spoke to us, and taught us.
