Hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami (RA)

Hadith 1094:1

Isma'il ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, al-Hajjaj ibn Abi 'Uthman narrated to me, Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to me, from Hilal ibn Abi Maymunah, from 'Ata' ibn Yasar, from Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami, who said: While we were praying with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), a man from the people sneezed, so I said: "May Allah have mercy on you." The people glared at me with their eyes, so I said: "Woe to my mother, what is the matter with you that you are looking at me?" He said: So they began to strike their thighs with their hands. When I saw them trying to silence me, I remained silent. When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) finished praying—and may my father and mother be sacrificed for him, I have not seen a teacher before him or after him better in teaching than him—by Allah, he did not rebuke me, nor did he insult me, nor did he strike me. He said: "Indeed, this prayer is not suitable for anything of the speech of people; it is only glorification (Tasbih), greatness (Takbir), and recitation of the Quran," or as the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people recently emerged from the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah), and Allah has brought Islam. Among us are people who go to soothsayers." He said: "Do not go to them." I said: "Among us are people who practice augury (Tiyarah)." He said: "That is something they find in their chests, so let it not hinder them." I said: "Among us are people who draw lines (in the sand)." He said: "There was a prophet who used to draw lines, so whoever’s line matches his, then that is it." He said: I had a slave girl who tended my sheep in the direction of Uhud and al-Jawaniyyah. I checked on her one day, and behold, a wolf had taken a sheep from her flock. I am a man from the children of Adam; I grieve as they grieve, but I struck her a blow. I came to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he considered that a grave matter for me. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I not free her?" He said: "Bring her to me." I brought her to him, and he said to her: "Where is Allah?" She said: "In the heaven." He said: "Who am I?" She said: "You are the Messenger of Allah." He said: "Free her, for she is a believer." And he said once: "She is a believer, so free her."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
