Hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam (RA)
حديث معاوية بن الحكم
Hadith 143:0
Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam said: While I was praying with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), a man among the people sneezed, so I said: "May Allah have mercy on you (Yarhamuk Allah)." The people glared at me with their eyes. I said: "Woe to my mother! Why are you looking at me?" They began to strike their hands on their thighs. When I saw them trying to silence me, I remained silent. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) finished his prayer—and may my father and mother be sacrificed for him, I have never seen a teacher before him or after him better in teaching than him—he did not scold me, nor did he strike me, nor did he revile me. He said: "Indeed, this prayer of ours is not suitable for any of the speech of the people; it is only glorification (Tasbih), declaration of greatness (Takbir), and recitation of the Quran." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a man who recently came out of Jahiliyyah (ignorance), and Allah has brought Islam. Among us are men who go to the soothsayers." He said: "Do not go to them." I said: "And among us are men who take omens (Tiyarah)." He said: "That is something they find in their chests, so do not let it prevent you." I said: "And among us are men who draw lines (in the sand)." He said: "There was a Prophet among the Prophets who used to draw lines, so whoever’s drawing matches his, then that is it." I had a slave girl who used to tend to my sheep in the direction of Uhud and al-Jawwaniyyah. One day, I went out and found that a wolf had taken a sheep from her flock. I am a man from the children of Adam; I get angry as they get angry, so I struck her a blow. I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and told him about it. He considered it a grave matter for me. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I free her?" He said: "Bring her to me." So I brought her to him. He said to her: "Where is Allah?" She said: "In the heaven." He said: "Who am I?" She said: "You are the Messenger of Allah." He said: "Free her, for she is a believer."
