Musnad Ahmad 925:1

Waki’ narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, and Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, Suwayd ibn Ghaflah narrated to me, he said: I went out with Zayd ibn Sawhan and Salman ibn Rabi’ah, until when we were at al-Udhayb, I picked up a whip. They both said to me: "Throw it away," but I refused. When I arrived in Medina, I met Ubayy ibn Ka’b and mentioned that to him. He said: "I found one hundred dinars during the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, so I asked him. He said: 'Announce it for a year.' So I announced it for a year, but I did not find anyone who recognized it." He said: He then said: "Know its number, its container, and its tie, then announce it for a year. If its owner comes, [give it to him], otherwise it is like your own wealth." This is the wording of Waki’. Ibn Numayr said in his narration: He said: "Announce it." So I announced it for a year, then I came to him, and he said: "Announce it." So I announced it for a year, then I came to him, and he said: "Announce it." So I announced it for a year, then I came to him, and he said: "Know its number, its container, and its tie. If someone comes and informs you of its number, its container, and its tie, then give it to him; otherwise, enjoy it." Muhammad ibn Ja’far narrated to us, Shu’bah narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, he said: I heard Suwayd ibn Ghaflah. And Abdullah narrated to us, Ubaydullah ibn Umar al-Qawariri narrated to me, Yahya ibn Sa’id narrated to us, from Shu’bah, Salamah ibn Kuhayl narrated to me, he said: I heard Suwayd ibn Ghaflah, he said: I went on a military expedition with Zayd ibn Sawhan and Salman ibn Rabi’ah, and I found a whip, so I took it. They both said to me: "Throw it away." I said: "No, but I will announce it; if I find someone who recognizes it, [I will give it to him], otherwise I will enjoy it." They refused me, and I refused them. When we returned from our expedition, I performed Hajj, then I came to Medina and met Ubayy ibn Ka’b. I mentioned to him their statement and my statement to them. He said: "I found a pouch containing one hundred dinars during the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, so I came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and mentioned that to him. He said: 'Announce it for a year.' So I announced it for a year, but I did not find anyone who recognized it. I came to him and said to him: 'I did not find anyone who recognizes it.' He said: 'Announce it for a year,' three times—and I do not know if he said that to him in one year or in three years—then he said to me on the fourth: 'Know its number and its tie; if you find someone who recognizes it, [give it to him], otherwise enjoy it.'" This is the wording of the hadith of Yahya ibn Sa’id. Muhammad ibn Ja’far added in his narration: He said: "I met him after that in Mecca, and he said: 'I do not know if it was three years or one year.'"
