Hadith 1229:1
Surayj ibn al-Nu‘man narrated to us, he said: Hammad—meaning Ibn Zayd—narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Kabir ibn al-Hakam al-Ghifari and ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ubayd, from ‘Udaysah, from her father: ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib came and stood at the door and said, "Is Abu Muslim there?" It was said, "Yes." He said, "O Abu Muslim, what prevents you from taking your share of this matter and participating in it?" He said, "What prevents me from that is a covenant my intimate friend and your cousin [the Prophet] made with me. He covenanted with me that when the tribulation occurs, I should take a sword of wood." And he had taken it, and it was hanging there.
حدثنا سريج بن النعمان، قال: حدثنا حماد يعنى ابن زيد، عن عبد الكبير بن الحكم الغفاري، وعبد الله بن عبيد، عن عديسة، عن أبيها، جاء علي بن أبي طالب فقام على الباب فقال: أثم أبو مسلم، قيل: نعم، قال: يا أبا مسلم، ما يمنعك أن تأخذ نصيبك من هذا الأمر وتخف فيه؟ قال: يمنعني من ذلك عهد عهده إلي خليلي وابن عمك، " عهد إلي أن إذا كانت الفتنة أن أتخذ سيفا من خشب "، وقد اتخذته وهو ذاك معلق
