Hadith 863:2
'Affan narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Abu 'Amr al-Qasmali, from the daughter of Uhban, that 'Ali ibn Abi Talib came to Uhban and said: "What prevents you from following me?" He said: "My intimate friend and your cousin—meaning the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him—advised me, saying: 'There will be tribulations and division. When that happens, break your sword and take a sword made of wood.' So the tribulation and division have occurred, and I have broken my sword and taken a sword made of wood." When he became gravely ill, he instructed his family to shroud him and not to dress him in a shirt. She said: "So we dressed him in a shirt, and when morning came, the shirt was on the clothes rack."
حدثنا عفان، حدثنا حماد بن سلمة، عن أبي عمرو القسملي، عن ابنة أهبان، أن علي بن أبي طالب أتى أهبان، فقال: ما يمنعك من اتباعي، فقال: أوصاني خليلي وابن عمك، يعني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقال: " ستكون فتن وفرقة، فإذا كان ذلك فاكسر سيفك، واتخذ سيفا من خشب "، فقد وقعت الفتنة والفرقة، وكسرت سيفي، واتخذت سيفا من خشب، وأمر أهله حين ثقل أن يكفنوه، ولا يلبسوه قميصا، قال: فألبسناه قميصا، فأصبحنا والقميص على المشجب "
