Musnad Ahmad 1189:1

Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, he said: Abu Ja’far—meaning al-Razi—narrated to us, from Husayn, from Shaqiq ibn Salamah, from Masruq, from Umm Ruman, who is the mother of ‘Aishah, she said: I and ‘Aishah were sitting when an Ansari woman entered and said: "May Allah do such-and-such to so-and-so," meaning her son. She said: I said to her, "And what is that?" She said: "My son was among those who spoke the hadith (the slander)." She said: I said to her, "And what is the hadith?" She said: "Such-and-such." ‘Aishah said: "Did Abu Bakr hear of that?" She said: "Yes." She said: "Did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, hear of that?" She said: "Yes." So she fell or collapsed, fainting. Then she recovered with a shivering fever, so I threw garments over her. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered and said: "What is the matter with her?" She said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, a shivering fever has seized her." He said: "Perhaps it is because of the hadith that is being spoken." She said: I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." Then ‘Aishah raised her head and said: "If I say [that I am innocent], you will not believe me, and if I swear, you will not trust me. My example and yours is like Jacob and his sons when he said: {So patience is becoming, and Allah is the one sought for help against that which you describe} [Yusuf: 18]." Then, when her exoneration was revealed, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came to her and informed her of that. She said: "By the praise of Allah, not by your praise," or she said: "And not by the praise of anyone."
