Hadith of Umm Ruman, mother of Aisha (RA), the Mother of the Believers

Hadith 1189:2

Ali ibn Asim narrated to us, he said: Husayn narrated to us, from Abu Wa’il, from Masruq, from Umm Ruman, who said: While I was with Aisha, an Ansari woman entered upon us and said, "May Allah do such and such to her son." Aisha said, "Why?" She replied, "He was among those who spoke the hadith [the slander]." Aisha said, "And what hadith?" She replied, "Such and such." Aisha asked, "And has that reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" She replied, "Yes." She asked, "And has it reached Abu Bakr?" She replied, "Yes." Aisha fell unconscious and did not recover until she was struck with a shivering fever. I stood up and covered her. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered and said, "What is the matter with her?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, she has been seized by a shivering fever." He said, "Perhaps it is because of a hadith that was spoken about her." Aisha sat up and said, "By Allah, if I were to swear to you, you would not believe me, and if I were to offer you an excuse, you would not excuse me. My example and yours is like Jacob and his sons: 'And Allah is the one sought for help against that which you describe' [Yusuf: 18]." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out, and Allah revealed her exoneration to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned with Abu Bakr and entered, saying, "O Aisha, Allah the Almighty has revealed your exoneration." She said, "By the praise of Allah, not by your praise." Abu Bakr said to her, "Do you say this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" She said, "Yes." Among those who spoke the hadith was a man whom Abu Bakr used to support. Abu Bakr swore that he would not support him anymore. Then Allah the Almighty revealed: "And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives..." [An-Nur: 22] until the end of the verse. Abu Bakr said, "Indeed," and he resumed supporting him.
