Hadith of Wathila ibn al-Asqa (RA) from the Levantine narrators

حديث (1) واثلة بن الأسقع (2) من الشاميين

Hadith 258:2

'Attab narrated to us, he said: 'Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, he said: Ibn Lahi'ah informed us, he said: Yazid—meaning Ibn Abi Habib—narrated to me, that Rabi'ah ibn Yazid al-Dimashqi informed him, from Wathilah—meaning Ibn al-Asqa'—who said: I was one of the people of the Suffah. One day, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called for a loaf of bread, broke it into a bowl, poured hot water into it, then added fat (or grease) to it, then crumbled it, then mixed it, then heaped it up. Then he said: "Go and bring me ten people, and you will be the tenth of them." So I brought them, and he said: "Eat, and eat from its bottom, and do not eat from its top, for the blessing descends upon its top." So they ate from it until they were full.

حدثنا عتاب، قال: حدثنا عبد الله بن المبارك، قال: أخبرنا ابن لهيعة، قال: حدثني يزيد يعني ابن أبي حبيب، أن ربيعة بن يزيد الدمشقي، أخبره عن واثلة يعني ابن الأسقع، قال: كنت من أهل الصفة، فدعا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوما بقرص فكسره في القصعة ، وصنع فيها ماء سخنا، ثم صنع فيها ودكا ، ثم سفسفها، ثم لبقها، ثم صعنبها ثم قال: " اذهب فائتني بعشرة أنت عاشرهم " فجئت بهم فقال: " كلوا وكلوا من أسفلها، ولا تأكلوا من أعلاها، فإن البركة تنزل من أعلاها، فأكلوا منها حتى شبعوا "
