Musnad Ahmad 8:2

'Affan narrated to us, Wuhayb narrated to us, Ayyub narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Sa'id, from Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Himyari, from three of the sons of Sa'd, from Sa'd: That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered upon him to visit him while he was ill, and he was in Makkah. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I fear that I will die in the land from which I migrated, just as Sa'd ibn Khawlah died. So pray to Allah to heal me." He said: "O Allah, heal Sa'd. O Allah, heal Sa'd. O Allah, heal Sa'd." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have much wealth and I have no heir except a daughter. Shall I bequeath all of my wealth?" He said: "No." He said: "Shall I bequeath two-thirds of it?" He said: "No." He said: "Shall I bequeath half of it?" He said: "No." He said: "Shall I bequeath a third?" He said: "A third, and a third is much. Indeed, your spending from your wealth is a charity for you, and your spending on your dependents is a charity for you, and your spending on your family is a charity for you. And for you to leave your family with a livelihood—or he said: with goodness—is better than leaving them begging from people."
