Tafsir
Verse range: 80:41
Tarhaquha means it covers it and envelopes it. Qatarah means blackness and darkness. There is nothing more desolate than the combination of ghabarah (dustiness/dullness) and blackness upon a face.
Al-Fayruzabadi and Al-Jawhari distinguished between ghabarah and qatarah. It has been said that qatarah signifies dust in its literal sense, while ghabarah refers to the gloom of distress that envelopes them due to their frowning. It is also said that both are literal, and the meaning is that upon them is dust and dullness layered upon dust and dullness.
Zayd ibn Aslam said: Ghabarah is that which settles toward the earth, and qatarah is that which rises toward the sky. The meaning is the arrival of dust upon their faces from both above and below. The primary interpretation is that which has preceded. Ibn Abi 'Ablah recited it as qatarah with the ta being quiescent (sukūn).
