Luqman: (1-2) Alif Lam Mim

Connection of this Sura to the Previous One:

The connection between the beginning of this Sura and the end of the preceding one (Surat Ar-Rum) is as follows:

  1. Allah Almighty said in Ar-Rum:

    {And We have certainly presented to the people in this Qur'an from every [kind of] example.} (Ar-Rum: 58) This pointed to the Qur'an being a miracle.

  1. Allah also said:

    {And if you bring them a sign...} (Ar-Rum: 58) This indicated their disbelief in the signs.

  1. This Sura begins by clarifying this point:

    {Alif, Lam, Mim. These are the verses of the Wise Book.}

  1. The disbelief is further alluded to later in this Sura:

    {And when Our verses are recited to him, he turns away in arrogance...} (Luqman: 7)
