Surah Al-Mursalat (The Emissaries): (50) Then in what discourse after this will they believe?

Tafsir (Exegesis)

Know that when the Almighty (Exalted is He) intensely warned the disbelievers from the beginning of this Surah until its end, using the ten arguments we have explained, and urged them to adhere to rational reflection, proof, and submission to the true religion, He concluded the Surah with astonishment at the disbelievers, clarifying that if they do not believe in these subtle proofs, despite their clarity and obviousness:

{Then in what discourse after this will they believe?}

Al-Qadi [Al-Baqillani] said: This verse indicates that the Qur'an is created (muhdath). This is because the Almighty described it as hadith (discourse/new report). Hadith is the opposite of qadim (eternal/ancient), and two opposites cannot coexist. Therefore, if it is hadith, it must not be qadim.

Our companions [the Ash'ari theologians] responded by saying that what is meant here is these specific words (the utterance of the Qur'an), and there is no dispute that these utterances are created.

And Allah, the Most Knowing, knows best.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the Master of the Messengers, Muhammad, and all his family.
