Surah An-Nazi'at: (46) As if, the Day they see it...

The exegesis of this verse has already been mentioned in the context of the verse:

{As if, the Day they see what they are promised, they will not have remained [on earth] except an hour of a day} (Al-Ahqaf: 35).

The meaning is that what they denied [in the world] they will see, to the extent that it will be as if they are eternally in that state, and as if they only remained in the world for an hour of a day, and then it passed.

If it is asked regarding the phrase: {or its morning (ḍuḥāhā)}, meaning the morning of the evening (ʿashiyyah), this is illogical because the evening does not have a morning.

We say: The answer to this is from several perspectives:

  1. First: 'Aṭā' narrated from Ibn 'Abbās: The hā' and alif are merely supplementary to the speech, meaning: "They did not remain except an evening or a morning."
  2. Second: Al-Farrā' and Al-Zajjāj said: The implication of adding ḍuḥā (morning) to ʿashiyyah (evening) is its addition to the day of the evening, as if it were said: "Except the evening or the morning of that day." The Arabs say: "I will come to you in the evening or its morning," as we have previously mentioned.
  3. Third: The grammarians stated that the slightest reason is sufficient for the correctness of an iḍāfah (genitive construction). Thus, the morning that precedes the evening can correctly be said to be the morning of that evening. Furthermore, the time of trial (tribulation) may be referred to as the evening (ʿashiyyah), and the time of relief may be referred to as the morning (ḍuḥā). Therefore, those who stand in the place of Resurrection refer to the time of their trial as the evening and the time of their relief as the morning of that evening. They say: "It is as if our lifespan in the world was nothing but these two hours."

And Allāh, the Glorified and Exalted, knows best. And peace and blessings be upon our Master Muḥammad and his family and companions.
