Tafsir of Abasa 80:3

Surah 'Abasa (He Frowned): Verse 3

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ (And what will make you know, perhaps...)

There are two interpretations regarding this:

The First View: What makes you certain about the state of this blind man? Perhaps he will be purified by what he receives from you—whether it is ignorance or sin—or perhaps your admonition will benefit him, and your reminder will be useful to him. Thus, it might be a means of grace for him in some acts of obedience. In summary, perhaps the knowledge he receives from you will purify him from what is inappropriate (ignorance and sin), or it will occupy him with what is appropriate (obedience).

The Second View: The pronoun in la'allahu (perhaps he) refers to the disbeliever. This means: You hoped that the disbeliever would be purified through Islam, or that he would be reminded, and the reminder would bring him closer to accepting the truth. Thus, {وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ} (And what will make you know) means: What makes you certain that what you hoped for will occur?

It has also been read with fatanfa'uhu (and your reminder benefits him) in the nominative case (raising), following yadhakkaru (he is reminded). It is also read with the accusative case (subjunctive) as the answer to la'alla (perhaps), similar to the verse: {فَأَطَّلِعَ إِلَى إِلَهِ مُوسَى} (Then I will look toward the God of Moses) (Ghafir: 37), which has already been discussed.

أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَى (As for he who considers himself self-sufficient...)

Then He said: {أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَى} (As for he who considers himself self-sufficient...)
