Surah 'Abasa (He Frowned): Verse 5
أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَى
(As for him who considers himself self-sufficient,)
Commentaries on Istaghna (Considers himself self-sufficient):
- 'Ata' said: It means he considers himself self-sufficient from faith (Iman).
- Al-Kalbi said: It means he considers himself self-sufficient from God.
- Some others said: It means he became wealthy (athra). This interpretation is flawed here because the Prophet's (PBUH) attention was not directed toward people based on their wealth or riches, such that it would be said to him, "As for the wealthy one, you turn toward him."
- Furthermore, the verse following this states: {But as for him who comes to you striving and he fears} (80:8-9). It did not say, "and he is poor and destitute."
- However, the view that Istaghna means self-sufficiency through wealth is correct in the sense that he considers himself self-sufficient from faith and the Qur'an because of his wealth.
فَأَنْتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّى
(It is you whom he preoccupies himself with.)
