There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was the Qur'an a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.

The pronoun in {their stories} (قصصهم): It refers to the messengers. This is supported by the reading of those who recited it as qisasihim (قصصهم) with a kasrah under the qaf. It is also said that it refers to Yusuf and his brothers.
If you ask: To what does the pronoun in {it was not a fabricated narration} (ما كان حديثا يفترى) refer, for those who read it with a kasrah?
I say: It refers to the Qur’an. That is: The Qur’an was not a fabricated narration, {but} it was {a confirmation of what came before it}—meaning the heavenly scriptures that preceded it—{and a detailed explanation of everything} needed for the religion. This is because it is the foundation upon which the Sunnah, consensus (ijma'), and analogy (qiyas) rely, following the proofs of reason.
Grammatical note: The accusative case of what follows {but} (لكن) is due to it being a conjunction linked to the predicate of kana (كان). It has also been recited in the nominative case (raf'), as in: "But it is a confirmation of what came before it."
From the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): "Teach your servants Surah Yusuf, for any Muslim who recites it and teaches it to his family and those his right hand possesses, Allah will ease for him the agonies of death and grant him the strength not to envy any Muslim."
