Surah An-Nur 24:63

ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ ﲃ ﲄ ﲅ ﲆ ﲇ ﲈ

Do not make [your] calling of the Messenger among yourselves as the call of one of you to another. Already Allah knows those of you who slip away, concealed by others. So let those beware who dissent from the Prophet's order, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment.

**An-Nur: 63** **"Do not make the calling..."**

If the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) requires your gathering with him for a matter and calls you, do not disperse from him except with his permission. Do not equate his calling you to the way you call one another, nor your departing from a gathering without the caller's permission.

Alternatively: Do not treat his naming and calling among you as you treat one another—calling him by the name his parents gave him. Do not say, "O Muhammad," but rather, "O Prophet of Allah" and "O Messenger of Allah," with reverence, glorification, lowered voices, and humility.

It is also possible that it means: Do not treat the Messenger’s supplication to his Lord as you treat the supplications of your common folk—young, old, poor, or rich—who ask for a need that may be granted or rejected. For the supplications of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) are heard and answered.

{يَتَسَلَّلُونَ} (They slip away): They depart little by little. Similar to tasallul are tadarruj (gradual movement) and tadakhul (entering).

{لِوَاذًا} (Stealthily/Taking cover): This is mulawadha, where one person takes cover behind another. It means they slip away from the group secretly, taking cover behind one another. Liwadhan is a state (hal), meaning "taking cover." It is said that some would take cover behind a man who had been granted permission to leave, and then the one who had not been granted permission would slip away with him. It is also recited as lawadhan (with a fatha).

{يُخَالِفُونَ عَنْ أَمْرِهِ} (Those who oppose his command): It is said: "He opposed him to the matter" (khalafahu ila al-amr) if he went to it without him. From this is His saying: "I do not intend to differ from you in that which I forbid you" (Hud: 88). And "He opposed him from the matter" (khalafahu 'an al-amr) if he turned away from it without him. The meaning of "those who oppose his command" is those who turn away from his command, excluding the believers; these are the hypocrites. The object is omitted because the purpose is to mention the one who opposes and the one from whom he opposes. The pronoun in "his command" refers to Allah (SWT) or the Messenger (ﷺ). The meaning is: turning away from his obedience and his religion.

{فِتْنَةٌ} (A trial): An affliction in this world. {أَوْ يُصِيبَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ} (Or a painful punishment): In the Hereafter.

  • Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "A trial" means killing.
  • Ata said: Earthquakes and terrors.
  • Ja'far ibn Muhammad said: A tyrannical ruler will be empowered over them.

{أَلَا إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ قَدْ يَعْلَمُ مَا أَنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ وَيَوْمَ يُرْجَعُونَ إِلَيْهِ فَيُنَبِّئُهُمْ بِمَا عَمِلُوا وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ} "Unquestionably, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. He already knows that upon which you stand. And [on] the Day they will be returned to Him, He will inform them of what they have done. And Allah is, of all things, Knowing."
