And We have certainly presented to the people in this Qur'an from every [kind of] example. But, [O Muhammad], if you should bring them a sign, the disbelievers will surely say, "You [believers] are but falsifiers."

{And We have certainly presented} We have described for them every description, as if it were a parable in its strangeness, and we have narrated to them every story of wondrous nature—such as the description of those resurrected on the Day of Resurrection, their story, what they say, what is said to them, and how their excuses are of no benefit and their pleas for pardon are not heard.

Yet, due to the hardness of their hearts and their rejection of the discourse of the Hereafter, when you bring them a sign from the verses of the Qur’an, they say: "You have brought us falsehood and vanity."

{Like that, Allah seals the hearts of those who do not know.} The meaning of "Allah seals" is the withholding of the graces (al-altaf) that cause breasts to expand so that they might accept the truth. He only withholds them from those He knows will not benefit from them, just as a preacher withholds his sermon from one for whom it is clear that the sermon is futile and will not take effect. This is a metonymy for the hardness of their hearts and the accumulation of rust and covering upon them. It is as if He said: "Likewise, the hearts of the ignorant harden and rust until they label the people of truth as people of falsehood," and they are the most deeply rooted of Allah’s creation in that trait.

{So be patient} Regarding their hostility.

{Indeed, the promise of Allah} Of your victory and the manifestation of your religion over all religions.

{is truth} It must be fulfilled and honored. Do not let their words and actions cause you to be light-headed or anxious, for they are a people who are misguided; it is not strange for them to act in such a way.

Note: It is read with a light 'nun' (la yastakhiffannaka). Ibn Abi Ishaq and Ya'qub read: "wa la yastahiqqannaka" (and let them not make you unworthy/overcome you), meaning: do not let them tempt you so that they possess you and become more entitled to you than the believers.

From the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Whoever recites Surat ar-Rum will have a reward of ten good deeds for every angel who glorified Allah between the heavens and the earth, and he will recover what he missed during his day and night."
