Surah As-Saff 61:6

ﱁ ﱂ ﱃ ﱄ ﱅ ﱆ ﱇ ﱈ ﱉ ﱊ ﱋ ﱌ ﱍ ﱎ ﱏ ﱐ ﱑ ﱒ ﱓ ﱔ ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ ﱞ ﱟ ﱠ

And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, "O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad." But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, "This is obvious magic."

Verse 6: And when Jesus said...

"O Children of Israel" It is said: He said "O Children of Israel" and did not say "O my people," as Moses did, because he had no lineage among them that would make them his people.

"Confirming what came before me of the Torah" The meaning is: I have been sent to you in a state of confirming what preceded me of the Torah, and in a state of announcing the good tidings of a messenger who will come after me. This means that my religion is the confirmation of all the books of God and all His prophets, both those who came before and those who will come after.

"From after me" It is recited both with the ya quiescent and with the ya vocalized with a fatha. Al-Khalil and Sibawayh prefer the fatha.

A narration from Ka'b: The disciples said to Jesus, "O Spirit of God, will there be any nation after us?" He replied, "Yes, the nation of Ahmad. They will be wise, learned, righteous, and pious. Because of their deep understanding, they will be like prophets. They will be content with God for a small amount of provision, and God will be content with them for a small amount of deeds."

Grammatical Inquiry: If you ask: What governs the accusative case of musaddiqan (confirming) and mubashiran (announcing)? Is it the meaning of "sending" inherent in the word rasul (messenger), or is it ilaykum (to you)?

I say: It is the meaning of "sending," because ilaykum is a prepositional phrase (silah) connected to rasul. It is not permissible for it to govern anything, because prepositions do not govern by themselves, but rather through the verbal meaning they contain. When they function as a silah (relative clause connector), they do not contain the meaning of a verb; so from where would they govern?

Variant Reading: It is recited: "This is a manifest sorcerer" (hadha sahirun mubin).


Verse 7: And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about God while he is being invited to Islam? And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
