Tafsir of Al-Insan 76:2

{نطفة أمشاج} (A drop of mingled fluids): Like burmah a‘shār (a pot of ten parts) and burd akyāsh (garments of various types). These are singular nouns, not plurals; therefore, they are used as adjectives for singular entities. It is also said: nuṭfah mashj (a mingled drop). Al-Shammākh said:

It folded its womb, expectant for the time, Upon a mingled drop, its essence base.

It is not correct for amshāj to be a broken plural of it; rather, they are both equivalent in singularity, as both are used to describe a singular noun. Mashajahu (he mingled it) and mazajahu (he mixed it) have the same meaning. The meaning is: from a drop that has had its fluids mixed together.

• Ibn Mas‘ūd: It refers to the veins of the drop.
• Qatādah: Amshāj means colors and stages, meaning: it becomes a drop, then a clot, then a lump of flesh.

{نبتليه} (That We may test him): This is in the position of a circumstantial qualifier (ḥāl). That is: "We created him while testing him," meaning: intending to test him. It is like saying, "I passed by a man with a falcon, ṣā’idan (hunting) with it tomorrow," meaning: intending to hunt with it tomorrow.

It is also possible that it means: moving him from one state to another, and this is called a "test" (ibtilā’) by way of metaphor.

• Ibn ‘Abbās: We transform him in his mother’s womb—a drop, then a clot.
• Others: It is in the position of postponement, meaning: "We made him hearing and seeing so that We may test him," though this is a forced interpretation.
