What is the maximum proportion of wealth that can be bequeathed?

Primary text
The maximum portion permissible for bequest is one-third of one's estate. This ruling is supported by the narration of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, who asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) if he could bequeath two-thirds of his wealth, to which the Prophet replied negatively, and upon asking about half, was again refused. The Prophet finally permitted the third, stating, "The third, and the third is much. That you leave your heirs wealthy is better than leaving them poor, begging from people."
